Cleveland Public Theatre buys its building

Cleveland Public Theatre can rest a little easier, now that its board was able to raise enough money to buy the building it has been renting for ten years.

The 18-month building campaign succeeded in meeting the $160,000 purchase price with the help of over 2,000 individual donors, dozens of benefits, the George Gund and Cleveland Foundations, and a $100,000 loan from the City of Cleveland's Economic Development Fund.

The West Side alternative theater and performance space frequently showcases gay and lesbian playwrights and performers.

The facility, at 6415 Detroit Ave. in historic Gordon Square, can now be used for more than productions. The first floor is being refurbished for classes and rehearsal space, and there is also a storefront presently available for rental.

With the building purchase complete, CPT's board and staff are on to phase two. Some $42,000 is required for major repairs such as a new roof and a remodeled elevator for physically challenged patrons. Desperately-needed lighting equipment is also on the shopping list. So far, the theater has raised $7,000 of the goal and is having a major fundraising dinner, silent auction and performance evening at the home of the Indians' All Star second baseman Carlos Baerga on August 29.

On Saturday, September 4, from 8 pm to midnight, the theater will be holding an Open House Party to meet and personally thank the public for its support for this campaign.

For more information about the Baerga benefit or to get on the theater's mailing list, call 631-2727.
